Ralf Kreibich’s Dornier Komet / Merkur

The Dornier Komet III / Merkur was an early German airliner and Ralf Kreibich has come up with another winner in his short line of early German aircraft. There is a beautifully modelled and textured exterior with 3D passengers and animated crew but inside it gets even better with fully 3D modelled instruments, clickable controls and animated parts that flap in the wind. A truly awesome freeware package and you’re not even limited to a single model, there’s three to choose from! Download it from Avsim or check out his other models.

Mario Noriega’s Piaggio P-149D

Mario gets better and better with each model (you should certainly keep an eye on his next project) and this P-149D is a real joy. Crisp, clean modelling, clear 2D panel and really well done 3D virtual cockpit this package has it all for GA fliers. Including a lovely smoke effect at high throttle. You can pick it up on Avsim.

Robert Sanderson’s Hawker Hurricane IID ‘Tin Opener’

Robert Sanderson’s work has been increasingly hard to find but certainly worth the effort. Not only is this plane of the most detailed models availible within this simulator it also sounds just right and has a complete joy to fly. Also included in the auto-installer package is some desert scenery and some example flights. If you have the power to run this beast smoothly in virtual cockpit of exterior view I highly suggest you do. Head over to Sim Outhouse and get counting the 3D modelled rivets!

iSD Project Italian Scenery

I’ve been flying a lot recently trying to get some product reviews done and dusted and I discovered some fantastic scenery sat on my hard drive. These high resolution airports are pure payware quality and fairly food performers. They feature custom taxi and runway textures, many photo real buildings and best of all animated traffic depending on season (de-ice required? Tune to…) and guides to aid your parking.

Roland Laborie’s Mirage 2000

Roland Laborie has produced some amazing packages for flight sim and this is another classic. There are two packages availible, one covering a single EC varient and the an update covering 4 planes with updates to the flight dynamics and more eye candy - so if you’re really into it you can get the lot! Sublime cockpit, exterior, effects… a wonderful package, it beats a lot of payware - especially the heads up display which is clear as day.

Veneaviones Rockwell Turbo Commander

Veneaviones continued their fantastic modelling skills from the Cessna Citation to their first full package here. You get a well crafted 2D and 3D panel, some very good sounds and a really fantastic model. It’s both a great looker and a great flyer.
